1 Piccadilly Gardens

Let's begin in Piccadilly Gardens where the buses and trams from the MetroLink system come in. This is no more than a 5 minute walk from both Piccadilly and Victoria train stations. This city centre transport hub is a natural starting point for our trip. This busy interchange underwent a total re-design in 2001- 02. Following the 1996 IRA bomb (which led to over 200 injuries but no fatalities), a huge redevelopment campaign was implemented in Manchester city centre with an international competition being held to identify the best architectural proposal for Piccadilly Gardens. Much of the redesign and re-building investment that is evident walking around Manchester today can be traced back to this era and the investment attracted from the Millenium Fund and as Manchester prepared to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

The 4 Statues

Historically, Piccadilly Gardens is the original site of the Manchester Royal Infirmary from 1755 until its relocation to Oxford Road in 1910. There are 4 statues surviving todaythat were erected on the original infirmary esplanade:

Sir Robert Peel 1788-1850 (founding father of the modern Police force giving origin to the slang word for the Police "bobbies")

James Watt 1736- 1819 (whose improvements to the steam engine helped to drive the explosion of economic growth during the cotton centred industrial revolution

Queen Victoria 1819-1901 (on the throne for 63 years and 7 months she was the longest reigning female monarch)

The Duke of Wellington 1769-1852 (a leading political and military figure most famous for commanding the defeat of the French in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815).

2 Market Street and Corporation Street

Walking away from Piccadilly Gardens down Market Street, one of Manchester's principal shopping areas, you will pass the Arndale Centre, Europe's largest inner-city shopping centre. Originally constructed in the 1970s, its proximity to the 1996 IRA bomb meant that it suffered extensive damage as a result. At the crossroads at the bottom of Market Street we turn right into Corporation Street. Passing the Marks & Spencer store on the opposite side of the road we walk under the bridge linking the store with the Arndale, close to where the van, containing a huge amount of Semtex explosive was parked on Saturday 15 June. An estimated 70 000 people were in and around Manchester city centre on the morning of that day, with usual numbers being swelled by the presence of international football fans. The following day Russia were due to play Germany at Old Trafford in the 1996 European Cup. The game went ahead in front of 50 000 people and Germany won 3-0.

3 Exchange Square

Here you will find the "Manchester Eye". This was first installed in 2004 and is a 60 metre tall Ferris wheel with 42 passenger carriages giving wonderful panoramic views of the city centre and beyond. Opposite this, on the corner of Corporation Street and Withy Grove you will find a modern entertainment venue named "The Printworks". Up until 1996 this was the home of a huge printing press owned by newspaper mogul Robert Maxwell. The complex contains mostly bars and night clubs including the Hard Rock Cafe', a leisure centre and a 23 screen Odeon Cinema which incorporates an IMAX 3D screen. Back to the other side of Exchange Square we find another shopping complex called The Triangle, on the front of which facing the street is a huge tv screen showing the BBC news.

Continuing along Corporation Street and crossing Fennel Street we come immediately to Cathedral Gardens and URBIS, a huge futuristic building that is an exhibition centre dedicated to city life. The National Museum of Football is also currently being transferred here and will soon be open to the public. The building opened in 2002 and was part of Manchester's Millennium Quarter redevelopment. Exhibition space hosting many visiting temporary displays of art is spread over 5 floors.

Chetham's School of Music

Opposite and in stark contrast to Urbis' contemporary architectural design, is Chetham's School of Music or "Chet's". The school motto is "Learn To Love And Play". This building originally housed an Orphanage founded by Humphrey Chetham in 1653. In 1969 the music school was launched and now hosts up 245 young people. Entry to Chetham's is open to all regardless of financial means with generous grants available to those who successfully audition and are selected. Selection is based purely on musical potential. As well as having an excellent reputation for musical tuition, Chetham's also has an enviable academic record being one of the top achieving schools in the UK.

Manchester Cathedral

At the other end of the triangle that is Cathedral Gardens you will find Manchester Cathedral. The church was extensively reconstructed during the 19th century which gives a deceptive impression that the cathedral is a relatively modern structure. However, its origins can be traced back to 700 CE. The cathedral is a beautiful hidden gem and it is well worth taking time to look in. Its Visitor Centre effectively guides you around bringing to life the amazing history that is responsible for the fine and impressive building still standing today. It is free to enter and there are volunteer guides available to make sure that you get the most from your stay.

5 The Shambles

This is the collective name for what are two separate buildings: The Old Wellington Inn dating back to the 16th century and Sinclair's Oyster Bar originally constructed in 1720. These two buildings were almost totally demolished in the early 70s inner city developments but escaped by being raised 15 feet above their original level and reopened in 1981. However, many people at the time complained that this new scheme hid the buildings from view. When the IRA bomb exploded in 1996 the surrounding buildings took all the blast and effectively protected the Shambles that remained intact within. In the interests of post bomb regeneration, the city council decided to move the two buildings, brick by brick, to a new and prettier site by the Cathedral, a distance of 300 metres away!

Sinclair's Oyster Bar is now an excellent Sam Smith's pub serving fresh oysters and a wide range of interesting beers. This provides us with a natural resting point on our tour.

6 The Royal Exchange

We now walk past the shopping giant "Harvey Nichols" towards St. Anne's Square, the home of The Royal Exchange Theatre. The theatre is a seven-sided, glass-walled capsule, literally suspended from huge marble pillars situated in the Great Hall of the former Cotton Exchange. The unique design means all seats are less than nine metres from the circular stage giving views from all angles. This theatre's policy is to express the bewildering, complex wonderment of life through the full spectrum of theatre. Looking up at the St Anne's Square side interior wall you can still see the old prices displayed from the cotton markets all over the world: New York, Alexandria and Liverpool from an era when cotton was king. The cafe bar is a really pleasant place to linger, have a drink and browse the unique art and craft shops within the Royal Exchange.

7 Mr Thomas's Chop House

Coming back outside on to St Anne's Square, we turn left and continue to walk away from the Shambles. Here we will stumble upon the unique and wonderful "Mr Thomas' Chop House" an authentically preserved Victorian pub set on the ground floor and basement of a narrow 4 storey Victorian building tacked on to the end of the majestic neo-classical Royal Exchange. This really is a special place from it's authentic black and white mosaic flooring to the fine lime green and white ceramic wall tiles and wooden bars with brass fittings, this is a place to just buy a drink and take the time to absorb your surroundings. Founded back in 1867, the New York Times described the place as "probably Manchester's most venerable pub". Should you be feeling hungry, the fine local menu and excellent friendly service will never disappoint. And let's face it, by now you deserve a rest! You have just completed the first of our Manchester city centre walks!

He described the anxiety and the racing thoughts to me as if it had happened yesterday, as opposed to twenty odd years ago. In this day and age of modern technology you can scan important documents and keep them in your "online safe"; you couldn't do that back then.

He did a lot of deep breathing during that drive and kept the windows open to cool himself down. In such circumstances it pays to know how to relax your mind and your excited emotions. You can relax yourself and calm yourself if only you know how. Self hypnosis is a great help with this.

Upon arrival at the airport, believe it or not, sitting on the curb stone, exactly where they had loaded up the car an hour and a half earlier, stood the briefcase. (I doubt that would be the case in this day and age, but that's another story entirely!)

I dare say that even as you put yourself into each of these scenarios - lost and found - you too experienced a little of this emotion simply by identifying with the circumstances. This demonstrates how you can use the power of your mind to change the emotions which you are experiencing.

Or you may prefer the upscale village of Portofino to see how the other half lives. If you like fish you can find a wide variety in restaurants ranging from mom and pop trattorias to fancy restaurants. Or visit the Acquario di Genova, Europe's largest aquarium.

The soil is poor; the slopes are steep and well-drained. Liguria has what it takes to produce fine wines. Ukraine - Kiev - St Sophia Cathedral

If you travel to Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, the one site that is an absolute must for you to see is St. Sophia's Cathedral. The staff in your Kiev hotel will be glad to give you directions to this most iconic of the city's attractions.

St. Sophia's Cathedral is the oldest church in Kiev, and by far the most magnificent. Medieval records do not agree on just when the church was built, but scholars believe construction began about 1017, and was completed ten years later. Its basic design is that of the Byzantine three-aisled cruciform temple. However, it has five aisles instead of the traditional three, to allow two additional altars; one for St. George, the patron saint of Prince Yaroslav the Wise; and the other for Michael the Archangel, protector of Kiev. The cathedral was named after the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople.

The church has ambulatory galleries inside and outside. One staircase tower leads to the choir loft, and another leads to the upper floor where the scriptorium, school, library, and offices are located. The central part of the cathedral is divided into aisles and transepts by twelve supporting columns. The structure is crowned with 25 cupolas. The cupolas and vaults are arranged in such a manner as to neutralize the outward thrust of the central cupola. This results in a harmonious pyramid-like arrangement. In 1054 two bays of the internal ambulatory were converted into a burial vault for Prince Yaroslav.

Over the centuries there were numerous alterations made to St. Sophia's. In the 17th century, because of damage caused by earthquakes, and deterioration due to age, the church's exterior was renovated in Ukrainian baroque style. The bell tower was added in the mid-18th century, and the gilded cupola in 1852. However, even with all these changes being made to the exterior, the church's spectacular interior remained as it had always been.

The inner décor of St. Sophia's is decidedly Byzantine, but the subject matter varies from that of other Greek churches. Instead of the cycle of Church feast days, St. Sophia's décor focuses on the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. St. Sophia's also has frescoes and mosaics on the walls and pillars, which is unusual in a Byzantine church. The church door, oddly enough, displays such secular scenes as horseracing and hunting.

In the Soviet era there was a great controversy when the Soviet government wanted to tear the cathedral down to make room for a park. Fortunately, historians fought to have the church preserved. Now it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 18th century Refectory has been made into a museum where visitors can learn about the medieval history of Kiev. There are excellent models that show how the city appeared before the Tatar invasions.

So you are planning to visit Lombardy, a region of northern Italy bordering on Switzerland, the Gulf of Taranto, and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its regional capital and largest city is Milan, the center of Italian finance, fashion, and media. Lombardy is home to La Scala, the greatest opera house in Europe, or perhaps the whole world. Lombardy is home to three DOCG wines. Franciacorta is produced near Lake Iseo between Bergamo and Brescia. This is Italy's answer to Champagne and priced accordingly. The rosé tends to cost more than the white. Sforzato di Valtellina and Valtellina Superiore are vinified from the red Nebbiolo grape locally known as Chiavennasca. You may not be surprised that these wines comes from western Lombardy not far from Piedmont. After all, Nebbiolo is Piedmont's signature grape. The best Valtellina Superiore wines tend to come from the rocky Sassella subdistrict.

The major white grape varieties include the local Garganega (the major componenent of Soave in next-door Veneto), Trebbiano di Lugana, Riesling Renano, and its cousin, Riesling Italico. International white grape varieties include Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco, the major components of Franciacorta. Regional reds include Barbera, Bonarda, Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo), and Lambrusco. Pinot Noir is found in Franciacorta and some other wines such as the high-volume Oltrepò Pavese DOC made in a wide variety of styles.

· The Minimum Age for drivers on French roads is 18 years of age. Learner drivers are not permitted.

· Children must be at least 10 years old before they can travel in the front passenger seat. Child seats and boosters must be provided and used for children under 10 years old.

· In the unfortunate circumstance of an accident or a breakdown, a warning triangle must be used on the road. Use also the orange SOS phones that are located along the roadway, and you must also inform the Police. Carry a yellow florescent jacket within the car to wear in the event of an accident.

· In the event of poor visibility always use your dipped headlights or foglights.

· Some useful telephone numbers to be aware of are: 15 for Ambulance, 17 for Police, 18 for the Fire brigade, 112 for all three services (similar to 999 in the UK).

· If you want to phone home to the UK, remember to precede the number with 0044 and drop the first zero from the UK number.

· Carry with you a good French road map. Even if the car is supplied with GPS!

· Overall, France has more than 8,000 km of motorways. These are known as 'Autoroutes' or A Roads. The vast majority of these are toll way roads (known as Les Péages), which are operated by private sector companies. Trunk roads are marked with the 'N' symbol.

· Speed limits are strictly enforced - so be careful. Radar speed traps are commonplace in France. 50kmh is the speed limit in towns/urban areas. Other trunk or rural roads are 90kmh. Dual carriageways are 110kmh, and motorways are 130km/h.

· Petrol is usually sold as Super/Super 97 - diesel is known as gas-oil. The larger supermarkets provide the cheapest fuel. It is important to remember that very few of the rural petrol stations stay open for 24 hours a day and they may well be closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays too. If your driving route in France takes on the rural route, remember that you might travel for miles without coming across a petrol pump, so don't let the petrol tank run down to nothing!

· Daunted by the French road signs - don't be! Once you get used to them you will be fine. A common sign you will come across is 'Toutes Directions' which means All Directions. Unless you want to visit a particular town or village this is a good way of bypassing a place. Such signs always appear together with another one called 'Autres Directions' meaning Other Directions. So if you see a sign for 'Lyon plus Autres Directions', unless you want to go to Lyon, then go the other way, and you will find signs to where you are going to.

· Except for main highways, road priority is always given to traffic that joins a road from the right, so watch out for the sign which states Priorité Á Droite.

If you are retired and you have a few hundred thousand Thai Baht, or you can prove 40,000 Thai Baht income per month that originates from outside the country - then, at the moment, you can stay and get a non-immigrant visa based on that situation.

The details of getting visas - the amounts you must have for retirement visas, the location you must go to get double entry visas rather than single entry visas, and many other variables change all the time. What doesn't change is that foreigners can consistently come to Thailand and live for basically as long as they want as long as they jump through the visa hoops immigration gives us.

Another issue that changes fast and often for foreigners considering retiring here, is that of safety in Thailand. Bangkok has recently been under fire as political parties joust for supremacy and control of the country since the ex- prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra fled the country. Can I Take Food Into Another Country

Carrying food when passing through customs is an area where many people get into trouble.

They innocently (some even knowingly) take their favourite foods, or food they have received on the plane, through customs without declaring it and then find themselves wearing a hefty fine.

Any food that is of an organic nature, i.e. any food that is animal based, dairy, fish, honey, plants, soil, seed, fruits and vegetable, etc. is not allowed to be taken from one country to another, regardless of how it is packed. These items can carry pests and diseases that may destroy crops and livestock and cause problems to public health.

Chocolate and other sweets are generally ok, as long as they don't contain any restricted items.

Hiding it in your luggage or acting like you weren't aware won't help. Quarantine is a serious issue and those sniffer dogs will find your food!

The same rules apply when you are travelling home or if you are mailing a gift to someone. As tempting as it may be, don't take food from another country home with you. With our societies are becoming more and more multicultural, chances are you'll find the same food at home anyway, so why risk it.

If you can't find it at home, you can look forward to eating it again on your return visit.

The short of it is, if you are carrying food, including food that was given to you on the flight - declare it. Yes, it may be confiscated, but it's better than wearing a hefty fine.

Big Family Getaways: Try Renting a Home

There are family getaways - and then there are family getaways. The first kind is where you pack up the kids, dogs and belongings and scrunch them into an RV or a couple of motel rooms and then kind of accept the fact there will be no privacy, quiet or downtime for the entire duration of your trip.

The second is the kind that includes privacy, quiet, downtime and general peace of mind because in this version of your family getaway you are going to book a vacation house -- and one that is big enough that everybody has their own little piece of real estate.

We concluded that the absolute best vacation home we ever rented is located in Leavenworth just at the eastern edge of the North Cascade Mountains. Leavenworth Town Fathers have milked this for the last 50 years or so with the Bavarian-themed storefronts and German-style beer and celebrations. The town just keeps getting more and more popular.

Tucked away from the downtown and a mile or so up Icicle Creek Road is a rental called Snowgrass Lodge, one of several offered by Destination Leavenworth but certainly in a class all by itself.

We wanted to sample a larger property and put it to the kid test by inviting seven grandchildren to come along and try it out. Unfortunately, that pesky Cascades weather - and very snowy passes -- limited our party to just our own immediate family of three, and my in-laws.

But no matter -- it was not hard imagining how well this particular lodging would suit a large family. In fact, we can't think of a property better suited for a large family group that is interested in a high-quality getaway in one of the best recreation spots in the entire Pacific Northwest.

There are a couple of comparisons that come to mind when trying to describe Snowgrass Lodge. The first sensation you get with this house is that you're walking into a home on the Street of Dreams. You know, the ones you can never quite seem to afford. The rich woods, the cathedral ceilings, the massive stone fireplace, the gourmet kitchen all let you know right away that this will be an upgrade from the RV park, baby.

The other sense you get is that you are now operating your own bed-and-breakfast inn - except that all the guests are your family. There are no other guests or innkeepers to share the kitchen or bathrooms with, yet the building seems large enough that it would make a reasonable size inn. There are three floors altogether with four separate living or sleeping areas, allowing plenty of separation between you and the in-laws, you and your siblings or you and your siblings' sometimes annoying family members.

Without trying to give you a detailed floor plan, suffice it to say that this vacation home has two master suites, a couple of guest bedrooms, a couple of kitchens, a huge family room for big-screen television-watching, a giant living room that is more like a hotel lobby and such conveniences as a jetted tub in the upstairs master suite as well as the outdoor hot tub overlooking the river. The location is superb as well, with views of the nearby mountains - including one that kind of looks like the Matterhorn - and wooded grounds, a lawn big enough for outdoor events and, of course, the nearby Wenatchee River.

So what does all this cost, you ask? A reasonable question with a surprising answer. Midweek it's only $475 a night for up to six guests with each additional adult $25 more, each added child $20 more. The rates are slightly higher on weekends and can be quite a bit higher on national holidays and other times of peak interest. But when you consider that a 4-star hotel room is going for $300 these days, a rate of $150 to $200 per couple or family seems to us a bargain for such a luxurious and exclusive retreat.

Leavenworth

Of course one of the best things about the Snowgrass Lodge is that it's in Leavenworth, which is about a three-hour drive east from Seattle and one of several locations in North Central Washington that are worthy of vacation time.

If you're a longtime Northwest resident, you know the Leavenworth story. If you just moved here, or have been living under a rock, the town began promoting itself as the Bavarian Village back in the 1960's. Back then it was a small town on the way to Seattle or a place that east-west travelers went through as they traveled cross-country on U.S. Highway 2. There was nothing especially remarkable except for one thing: the scenery.

Seattle people would notice right away as they drove down Tumwater Canyon just outside of Leavenworth how the mountains and rivers seemed to create picture postcard photos around every corner on the windy two-lane highway. Then, breaking out of the mountains, these travelers would immediately be met by the town of Leavenworth which is situated right at the base of those towering peaks.

Things were not going well economically back then and the powers that be decided they could change that by makikng the village look like a small town in the Alps. All it took was a series of renovations to virtually all of the town's local businesses and, voila, the Bavarian architecture combined with the mountain scenery to create the illusion that motorists were traveling through the Bavarian Alps.

Today the town attracts many thousands of visitors to annual events such as the Christmas Tree Lighting Festival and the Autumn Leaf Festival and it can be difficult to find lodging during those popular celebrations. The town also fills up with tourists any given weekend and, during summer and peak times of the year, you'll also find throngs of visitors scouring the local shops midweek for some kind of Bavarian souvenir, or dining in local Bavarian themed restaurants, or any of several other types of restaurants now available in Leavenworth.

But Leavenworth is much more than shops and food. The area is quite a recreational paradise with numerous trails leading into the Cascade Mountains and with such attractions as Lake Wenatchee, just a half-hour's drive away. In spring, river rafting is popular on the Wenatchee River.

About 30 miles east of Leavenworth is Wenatchee, the largest city in the region and home to several attractive parks and trails, including a loop trail that takes you up one side of the Columbia River and down the other side. Wenatchee acts as a kind of hub for North Central Washington, where you also find a couple of other excellent tourist destinations: the Wild West theme town of Winthrop in the Methow Valley and Lake Chelan, a natural wonder more than 50 miles long and known for excellent water sports and fishing.

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: Leavenworth, Washington, is about a three-hour drive from Seattle on Highway 2, or you can take Interstate 90, which connects with Highway 97 to come out just east of Leavenworth.

WHAT: Leavenworth is the Bavarian City, and the Snowgrass Lodge is an especially good way for an extended family to enjoy the city and all that it has to offer. Because the lodge easily separates into four different living areas, it's practical to invite other families or couples to stay in the lodge with you, which will end up costing each couple or family little more than a night in a nice motel room.

WHEN: Anytime of the year, but beware that prices for lodging are much higher during certain times of the year and when special events are planned.

You don't even have to leave the city to find some top quality golf. Among the six public courses in Edinburgh are Portobello, which is overlooked by Arthur's Seat, and Braid Hills, with its views over the Forth.
