When in Berlin

Set your post-sightseeing sights on Mitte, a neighborhood flush with new galleries and cafés.

In the heart of Mitte, Berlin's central borough, people flock on sunny afternoons to a café called Strandbad Mitte—Mitte Beach. Beach? With the nearest sea 250 miles away?

"I called it ‘Beach' because I always want to go and never have the chance," says owner Andreas Krämer. "Besides, in the summer, we have sun here from morning till night." Sure enough, German sun worshipers fill the Strandbad's window benches and yellow beach chairs every dry day, sunglassed faces tilted to the free tanning rays between sips of cassis milk shakes.

Strandbad Mitte is part of an eclectic palette of bars, restaurants, galleries, and studios that has sprung up in recent years around Auguststrasse and Sophienstrasse, Berlin's new Soho. Once a crumbling neighborhood of war-scarred buildings in east Berlin—you can still see shrapnel marks from World War II, though they're now being face-lifted with ochre facades—this old Jewish quarter today teems with artists, intellectuals, and Germany's new yuppies, cell phones a-tingle.

Courtyards are a staple of Mitte. Built to accommodate the explosion of new workers during Berlin's fast industrial growth in the late 19th century, these chains of interior spaces were hotbeds of poverty—and socialism. For the 40 years of communist rule they remained dismal. Today they've been reinvented as design studios, offices, galleries, shops, and eateries. One of the more striking of these courtyard complexes is the Hackesche Höfe, opposite the Hackescher Markt elevated-train (S-Bahn) station. A maze of art deco buildings linked by eight courtyards, it houses everything from crafts shops to movie theaters. Spring through fall, special events turn the place into a carnival of outdoor theater and art. A new cabaret venue, Chamäleon Varieté, has also put this complex on Berlin's busy nightlife map; try to stay for the popular midnight show, when other acts sometimes drop by and new talent takes a turn.

In fact, nighttime Mitte pulses with a wild assortment of restaurants and bars running the gamut from star-ceilinged Al Contadino Sotto Le Stelle—a noisy trattoria where you can't go wrong with the thick bean soup and mozzarella appetizer—to Fournier, a minimalist wood-on-wood restaurant tilting heavily toward Pacific Rim specialties (try the green curry or salmon-and-mushroom entrées). I chanced upon a hideaway bar called Don De Lion in the Heckmann Höfe courtyards just off Auguststrasse, drawn by the improbable thump of reggae music. A dimly lit little place, Don pumps out Caribbean and African-American hits while serving beer from Jamaica and the United States. "Many Americans come here looking for German beer, but we don't serve any," laughs owner Thorsten Zirkeir, a German who often travels to Chicago to buy the music for his disc jockey.

Sixty-six years after its troubles began with the collapse of German democracy, a neglected neighborhood has found new life. In fact, the exhilarating mix of contemporary conversation in a historic setting is emblematic of the dual nature of Berlin itself, a new/old city that is reincarnating, once again, into the capital of Germany.

Best For: Adults and students; some of the restaurants and galleries are small and crowded, so not ideal for families.

Experience ancient Greece in modern Athens

Ancient in the true sense of the word the origins and the rich culture of Athens can be traced back to the era when mythical gods and goddesses ruled the world. Today its fascinating history is portrayed by an array of imposing ancient structures each with its own distinctness. With a culture reflecting this rich history, a visit to Athens is definitely a unique experience, especially for the history buff.

Those arriving in Athens for the first time generally head immediately for the Acropolis. Parched on a steep rock above the sprawling city this symbol of ancient Athens dominates the city’s skyline.

Foundations laid in 490BC its main construction had taken place in the Golden Age of Pericles during the period 461-429BC. The site of Acropolis includes the Acropolis Museum and four other sacred building all built in the 5th century BC. The monumental entrance, the Propylaea, adorns the site with its Ionic and Doric styles and the
beautifully restored Temple of Athena Nike is on the left of Propylaea. The largest building on the Acropolis, the biggest surviving monument of Doric architecture, entirely made of Pentelic marble, is the awe-inspiring Pathenon – the backdrop to the magnificent view of Athens from this exotic site.

The remains of ancient Athenian commercial and civic centre, Agora, lies clustered below the Acropolis. The area, where once the great philosophers Socrates and Plato trod, is littered with ruins of numerous ancient buildings such as the Dionysos Theatre, the world’s oldest theatre where great plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides were first performed. The restored building of the 200 BC Stoa of Attalos now contains artifacts portraying 5,000 years of Athenian history.

Southeast of Athens, about an hour’s ride, is Sounion with its famous cape where the foundations of a small Temple of Athena Souniaea and the ruins of the temple of Poseidon are located. Although the famous statue of Poseidon no longer reigns over the ocean below, the Temple of Poseidon, with its magnificent view of the Aegean, still fulfills the role from its high promontory.

The city of Athens itself holds a heap of treasures, lively night life, interesting shops, little churches and restaurants serving culinary delights. With a fairly good public transport system and being pedestrian friendly it’s easy for tourists to explore the city. A popular gathering place for all visitors to the city is the old town section of Athens, better known as Plaka. A stroll through the little streets, with its ancient monuments, Byzantine churches and mosques, is an experience in itself. The traditional ‘rembetika’ music at night complements the atmosphere.

Most of Athens’ museums are clustered along the Vassilissis Sophias Avenue. Also known as the ‘museum mile’ starting from the Syntagma Square, a walk along this avenue takes you through the 3,000 years of Athenian history perusable in some of the best museums including the Benaki Museum, the Museum of Cycladic Art and the Byzantine Museum.
Other places in the city worth exploring are, Monastiraki, renowned for its flea market, the old town atmosphere and lively night life in Psirri, and the Syntagma Square for just relaxing and people watching.

Northern Costa Blanca Spain

The small town of Moraira is set on the Mediterranean with a backdrop of hills, rising upwards towards the Jalon Valley. About 1 hour from the airport at Alicante, Moraira's climate averages 18 degrees over the year with an impressive 325 day average of sunshine.

The town maintain its fishing port history which can still be seen at the interesting fish auction from Tuesday to Sunday on the harbour side, many of the fishes caught ending up on a plate in one of the excellent restaurants and bars around the modern marina and port.

Javea is set in an area of outstanding beauty. The town has an historic past and the old town is beautiful to behold with its traditional buildings with their small balonies looking out towards the main Javea beach of Playa del Arenal with its long stretch of sand. Bars and restaurants can be found alongside the Avenida del Mediterraneo alongside the Javea harbor area. Many of the Javea accommodation rentals on the site have spectacular views from the hills overlooking the town of Javea and its beaches.

Chocolates, Beer, Bikes , Barges - Belgium , Holland

We arrived to cosmopolitan Brussels with 3 lost bags and 1 missing person. One suitcase went to Moscow but all caught up eventually. Janice and I are led a perfect size group of 39, not too big to get lost in or too small for comfort.

Each July trip draws school teachers who have loyally followed me around the world and they do love Europe. We began with a light orientation tour in the historic heart of this capital, followed by a tour of the Chocolate Museum. I found this boring, but the tastings were great.

If it's Tuesday, it must be Belgium. After breakfast, we began our morning walking tour of the 17th century Grand Place. It was actually 8:30 Sunday morning and I marveled that in over a dozen visits here, I've never seen this place so empty. It echoed in silence as tourists slept and the locals were gone for holiday. Sunlight brilliantly flooded the gothic cathedrals, classical facades and art nuveau houses. We were alone and it was breathtaking.

Monday we toured this proud and regal city that is revealed in its royal palaces, cathedrals, museums and monuments. We see the headquarters of the EU and site of the 1958 World's Fair with the massive silver Atonium. We photograph the Mannekin Pis. [I never understood the love of this small bronze statue but it represents Brussels. Perhaps it's found in the irreverence of the artist.]

Paula was our guide for several days here. Her stellar knowledge brought the history of Belgium to life, particularly the time when King Leopold purchased the Congo as his personal playground. Paula deeply cared for her work and later invited us to visit yet another chocolate factory, but fully sated, we declined.

For free time we dispersed into tiny alleyways to intentionally get lost. Some searched out beer halls or hot sugar waffles, as others shopped for tapestries at give-away prices.

Things become a bit blurry from here. I'd taken some great notes on napkins throughout and managed to loose them all enroute. But memory serves well as we head to the capital of Flanders and enchanting Bruges.

This town is a complete UNESCO World Heritage Site with a tranquil character that can't be described. The people have done so much to protect its medieval feel, it provides the magical affect of stepping back into time. It is called "Little Venice" and we enjoyed a boat cruise through the veritable maze of old canals that led to the Lake of Love.

We strolled through ancient squares lined with houses of gabled rooftops and various cathedrals of holy this and holy that.

The highlight of this trip for me was our 2 hour city tour on bicycles. We looked like a motley crew as we headed out into narrow cobbled streets and over countless bridges. As I peddled, I observed the group behind me. One woman is nearing 70, two are smoking cigarettes, Janice is talking to America on her cell and one unmentionable crashes into a car! She had to pay the driver for damages on the spot.

It took complete concentration to cross the busy tram tracks. That morning we rode through Vodelpark and the Red Light district.

It was interesting to see the prostitutes as they just woke up to get their coffee dressed in jeans and sneakers Holland is the land of the free. With prostitution legal, my group is most inquisitive on this matter. We laughed as Marilyn said, "Suzy, they all ask questions on sex. Are they frustrated?"

I arranged a professional guided walking tour of the Red Light district in the oldest part of Amsterdam for the world's oldest profession. Since the 1400's, seamen would dock here to unload. Guides Gabriel and Shuert boldly led us through alleys of half clad ladies. No photos allowed. We're told that some fear it'll go out on the web.

Our guides explained that some women are forced here nowadays and some are simply ashamed. Ladies differ in size, shape and color as we strolled through different quarters.

On one street they're all obese. We learned to identify the transsexuals by two things surgery can't change an Adam's apple and a straight waist.

Tastes differ; the oldest woman here is 76 and only works in summer. Only half use protection and monthly health checks are required

There are around 1000 prostitutes working 500 windows. They pay $200 to rent a window for 6-8 hours, and can make up to $600 per day. They pay taxes and can write receipts for services rendered. If the curtain is closed they are not on break.

The area is flooded with tourists. Men pay $60 for 30 minutes, yet statistics reveal the average time spent is just 6 minutes.

We crossed "Pill Bridge" named for the drugs pushed there and then toured the Erotic Museum with photographs and "tools of the trade" dating back to the 17th century on display.

As I pondered and stared at a metal chastity belt, Gabriel said "that blacksmiths always had a spare key which came in handy when the husbands were away at sea."

She also insisted the Dutch were far less promiscuous than Americans. I was concerned about my ultra-conservative teachers but nothing seemed to shock them. After awhile, our senses were over saturated and it became dull.

The saddest sight was seeing a "heroin hooker". She was emaciated with glazed eyes and so many track marks that she had to shoot it now under her tongue. Police cameras were everywhere 24/7, there is little crime and we felt totally safe.

Pot and hash are legal here in over 400 "coffee shops" that sell joints and "ganja-space milkshakes." Locals told me they felt Americans were oppressed by too many rules and can't understand how our drug companies can sell meds on TV.

Enough on the wild side, this is also the art capital of Europe boasting more museums per square foot than any other city. Marilyn gave us a quick art lesson in a nutshell. She explained that this is the 400 year celebration of Rembrandt (1606-2006). He came from a family rich in windmills. As a child, he was an expert sketcher.

Later in medical school, he did anatomical drawings of corpses from criminals. He studied more and soon rose above the Dutch masters with the ability to capture light and shadows in paint. He always began with a black canvas.

Though blessed with enormous artistic talent, he couldn't manage his finances. He died penniless and was entombed in a pauper's grave.

Many think they've seen Europe, but miss the countries with the most charm. Here we were enveloped by history, culture and all that the Old Continent should be. Also this wasn't a typical EU vacation with endless museums and cathedrals, but a creative itinerary which provided large fun.

Everyone's favorite stop was Bruges, but for me Amsterdam was an urban masterpiece. I found the Dutch far friendlier than other Europeans.

This visit rekindled my love for the Netherlands, that tiny country with 2 names. This time I looked through new eyeballs with my teachers who were experiencing their first trip abroad.

It was a wonderful group of travelers and one couple connected whom we later labeled "The Honeymooners" and rummor has it they will be married 7/7/07 in Rome.

In flight home on Delta, I noticed among my sleepy group that some were munching on their chocolates that were meant for gifts back home. And once in line at US Customs, some were proudly wearing their new, brightly painted, uncomfortable wooden clogs. I just have to do this trip again.

Budget Travel Round the World

As a matter of fact, I think traveling should never be too expensive. I'm sure, if you can spare some time researching before you travel, you can make big savings on money.

Traveling by air is not too expensive now. Airlines try to fill planes to capacity and also adjust people on flight with layovers. An excellent online resource is Priceline which permits you to point to an inexpensive price for air tickets and hotel bookings. Air carriers like United Express and Southwest are really low cost and their ticket agents sell the airline flights which have been discounted.

If you possess an adventure spirit, you can act as an air courier to large or medium companies which are ever in process to airlift their packages each day to different destination in the World. They need some person to safely deliver the package. You could be that person, the air courier of the company. You can fly to Africa, Europe, Asia or South America, just almost all sides of the Globe and at a heavy discount. You can just see, a flight from New York to Antwerp may cost $2300 return fare, but if are on a courier flight then it would cost you just $395.

You may sometimes be able to fly for free! You just need to buy a book on air courier travel and you could start off. However this has its own pitfalls, like you are not always sure as to how long you can stay at the place you are visiting and weather you can fly your family or kids along with you.

Some other ways you can get discounted airfare are:

- You can plan your travel during off peak times of the year.
- Make it a point to travel during the weekdays and avoid weekends.
- You should fly standby.
- You can try this trick, you give up your seat on an overbooked flight and in return you get a discount voucher. You can now get a free flight in the country for being so accommodating. You can use the ticket you got to fly later in the year.
- If possible, you can try for compassion fares of airlines. They are offered if you show the death proof and prove your relationship.
- Once you reach the destination, you should visit local Chamber of Commerce and request a tourist kit. If you can manage it, it will have lots of discounts and offers for you. Make it a point to travel by subway or a bus as it will cost you much less and save your money. If you plan to stay at the place, you can get a bus pass which will be still cheaper option.

The place where you're going to stay depends on your choices. It can be costly or may come really cheap. If you want to, you can exchange homes with the family in your destination country or better still, you can stay at an apartment at a nominal rent and avoid expensive hotel. Similarly if choice is available, you can stay in college dorm. You can even camp.

Make it a habit to avail and use any of the discounts you come across. Senior citizens are offered liberal discounts on lodging, hotels, airline travel or transport.

Easy Travelling With Eurostar Between UK and France

Eurostar is one of the fastest and most comfortable ways to travel across Europe, with 3 different travel classes. In Business Premier and Leisure select classes, travellers enjoy on-board meals served at their seats and a variety of dishes and drinks available at the bar-buffet. Premier travellers also benefit from numerous advantages, such as shorter check-ins, wireless internet or lounge access before departure. With a wide service offer and great efficiency (96% of the trains arrived on time in 2009), Eurostar is growing more successful each year, welcoming more than 100 million customers on board in August 2009, with about 50 trains taking the tunnel every day. Within 16 years of existence, Eurostar's customer number has risen from 3 to 9.2 million.

Since November 2007, Eurostar's network has undergone several modifications aiming at increasing the speed of trips. Thanks to these works, who have tremendously boosted tourism on the European scale, it now only takes 2 hours and 15 minutes to go from central London to central Paris, faster and cheaper than air travel, with an average speed of 186.4 miles per hour.

Assuming your destination is the sunny city of Nice, the Eurostar service will take you to Lille in 1 hour and 20 minutes, and you can take a high-speed train (TGV) nonstop from Lille to Nice, with a trip of about 7 hours and 22 minutes. Therefore, within less than 9 hours you can go from London to Nice with only one stop at Lille and for less than £160. For seasoned travellers, who aren't afraid of changing stations, it is possible to go from London to Nice within 8 hours and 50 minutes with a railway station in Paris, Lyon or Marseille.

According to route-planning site Mappy.com, it takes about 13 hours and a half to drive from central London to central Nice, with costs reaching up to £240. Is it really necessary to point out how exhausting and expensive undertaking such a journey might be?

As for air travel, prices can be matched if the booking is done weeks in advance, but the trip is shorter and more convenient with Eurostar, as trains take you directly in city centres, whereas travelling through busy airports often requires long check-ins and commuting to finally reach the final destination. For example, it takes 50 minutes to go from central Paris to Charles de Gaulle airport, and 75 minutes to go from Stansted airport to Victoria station in London. Here's another example: a flight to Nice from London's Luton airport takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. If you take commuting and then checking-in into account, with almost 50 minutes on the bus on your way to Luton, 120 minutes waiting to checking, 2 hours and 30 minutes flying, and then 20 minutes to go from Nice airport to the city centre, you can spend about 5 hours and 40 minutes sitting around, or walking from one platform to another.

Let's not also forget one crucial upside when taking Eurostar trains, which is unlimited luggage. Indeed, although your belongings on Eurostar services are searched, you can take as many suitcases as you like with you, which is rather convenient for long holidays abroad. Families and couples won't have the trouble of counting how many clothes everybody's allowed to bring, and how many times it is necessary to hop on and off trains, buses and planes. Eurostar is therefore a fast, comfortable and convenient way to travel, which will take you to Paris for a planned holiday or on a whim, for a day or two.

The beautiful island of Cyprus lies in the Mediterranean Sea, it basks in up to 300 days of sunshine a year making it an island for all seasons.

If you’re looking for your next holiday hotspot or a perfect place to live in the sun here are five top reasons to consider Cyprus.

1) Cyprus has the perfect climate: in the short autumn and winter months the temperature never drops so low that the delicate fruit trees fail to deliver their burgeoning crop and in the summer the temperature never soars so high that the beautiful jasmine and bougainvillea blossoms wilt.

Because the weather in Cyprus is considered to be so healthy it has long been an island favoured by all the family, it’s not too hot for those looking for an idyllic retirement destination and it’s not too cold or wet for those looking to escape to the sun.

3) Cyprus has been inhabited for at least the last 9,000 years and as a result it is steeped in history, rich in culture and charm and boasts an abundance of interesting historical sites, castles, fortresses and ruins.

There is so much to do and see in Cyprus that holiday makers return frequently and many decide to settle permanently on this amazing island.

4) Aphrodite’s island is also rich in flora and fauna; it has many rare species of orchid for example as well as being home to rare birds of prey, owls, flamingos and butterflies. In the spring and autumn walking tours are very popular with those wanting to experience Cyprus up close and personal and the Troodos and Kyrenia mountain ranges both have many paths to explore and views to experience.

5) The Cypriot lifestyle is laid back, warm, friendly and hospitable. The Cypriot people enjoy a leisurely pace of life that we can all envy’coming to Cyprus on holiday or to live people find they quickly adapt to long lunches and evenings spent out under the stars enjoying a meze of local dishes, some fine Cypriot wine and the company of great friends.

Switzerland, formally known as The Confederation Helvetica, is a landlocked mountainous haven in the heart of Europe. Partially due to the isolating geography, the Swiss people have maintained a strong commitment to tradition, independence and the preservation of their long-established way of life. Hence, it is very important for the traveler to note that Switzerland is not a member of the European Union and uses the Swiss Franc as their form of currency.

The different areas of London

Young people seeking employment in London choose to live in the city itself to get the most from its lively atmosphere and many opt to live close to their workplace. However, because of the great public transport system in place it’s not necessary to let your job dictate where you reside.

London is split in half by the Thames with North London seen as the more upmarket side. Most corporate businesses are found in this half so in places it has the feel of industry and offers more tube stations. Well known areas in North London including Archway and Highway, which have ’small town’ atmospheres while inescapably being part of something bigger.

To the west are areas such as Camden, Notting Hill and Wembley which are tourist hotspots for their busy markets, classy restaurants and, of course, the national team’s football stadium which not only houses some of the top games in the country but also a variety of pop concerts.

South of the river has a lot more green space as a result of it formerly being a rural area outside the city walls. Some of the best parks are those found at Battersea, Clapham and Richmond.

As well as Battersea Park, the area is home to a famous dog and cat home as well as the power station that David Cameron and Margaret Thatcher have made famous speeches about. Battersea estate agents are always in high demand, with the area around the park one of the most popular locations.

To the south west you find places such as Earl’s Court, Fulham and Putney. The social scene in this area is one of the liveliest in the city with Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre a centre for gigs and concerts. The annual Oxford – Cambridge boat race starts from Putney Bridge every year and draws a large from all over.

As you can see there’s plenty of diversity in London and no matter where you choose to live you’re bound to find something of interest to you.

Costa Rica Adventure Vacation

Costa Rica is a fantastic place to visit. With its subtropical climate and amazing beaches, it is an ideal place for everyone. If you are looking for a more adventurous vacation then look no further, Costa Rica is the ultimate adventure playground.

There are so many adventure activities to choose from. You can feel your adrenaline pumping as you zoom through the forest on a canopy tour, or experience dangerous but exhilarating conditions as you hurtle down waterfalls. The list of things to do on your action packed vacation is endless.

One of the more popular adventures is the canopy tour. These tours are based in some of the country's thick jungles; most are zip line style tours. But some have aerial trams, lookout towers and suspension bridges. You will have a unique view of the forests, while you zoom from platform to platform. Some of the tours will involve hiking, and there are different degrees of difficulty to suit every visitor. If you're really adventurous then you can try the 3280ft long "sensational cable". It will propel you over the trees at a speed of up to 55mph. Whichever way you decide to do your canopy tour, you will be guaranteed an amazing day.

Other adventure activities that are available in Costa Rica are, white water rafting, waterfall rappelling and scuba diving to name but a few. Waterfall rappelling, which is an amazing activity, is where you will basically abseil (rappel) down a waterfall. Be prepared to get soaked, and it can be dangerous but it is also a great deal of fun. Rafting is an extremely popular activity, and there are many different good sized rivers in Costa Rica. You can join a team to experience the thrill as you raft down them; again expect to get very wet.

The best time to visit Costa Rica for an adventure vacation, if you want to do a selection of the activities, is between November and April. If you are visiting for one specific activity like scuba diving then March or May might be preferable. October and May are good months to visit Costa Rica as there are less tourists. Most of the beach areas are quieter and less crowded, although some tours and activities may not be available.

When booking your adventure tour it is advisable to book through a reputable company, ask at your hotel which companies they would recommend. This will protect you if anything goes wrong; although this is very unlikely. Also ask the advice of other travellers, or friends and family that have been to Costa Rica. They will be able to advise the best places to see, and the reliable companies to use. Make sure that the company you use for your tours and activities have good insurance and their equipment is well maintained and in good condition.
