8 Tips for Traveling In Germany

1. Language
Learn some German before your trip. As is known to all, German is the main language spoken in Germany, but when you travel in Germany, you will find that almost all the people can speak English more or less. However, it is still recommended that you can speak some German so that you could make yourself easily understood when communicating with Germans. You will find it really useful when ordering a meal, asking directions and especially when traveling in some areas which are not popular tourist attractions.

2. Arrange your schedule
Don't rush on your journey. Germany is a country that boasts of its beautiful countryside views and every tourist is not willing to miss such fantastic scenery. Since tour time is limited, a list of places of interest that you want to visit becomes necessary and helps you to arrange your time. Planning your trip carefully so that you do not have to rush on your trip and also you can visit your favorite sites. Southern Germany is famous for its castle tours which attract a lot of people who are interested in history every year. Central Germany is an ideal place for those who want to ski or hike their way through the country.

3. Passports and visas
Get your passports and visas ready. If you are not a citizen from European Union members, you should bring a valid passport to enter Germany. For U.S. citizens who want to pay a visit to Germany, a valid passport is required as well and if the stay is going to last more than 90 days, they also have to get a visa.

4. Pack light
Another advice is that you'd better pack light when you travel in Germany and in any other areas in Europe. Make sure your luggage can be put into the carry-on compartment on the plane; otherwise it will not fit in the room offered on trains. What's more, you should always bear in mind that you may live in a hotel that has no elevator and you have to carry some heavy luggage up to your floor.

5. Stay in one town
Don't visit too many places in a short vacation. If you choose Germany as a destination for a short vacation, picking up one city or one town to visit and stay is a smart choice. Thus, you can enjoy the vacation without wearing yourself out traveling long distances in a hurry. Instead, you can get familiar with the local customs and feel embraced in the charming town through your stay. You will feel more relaxing in the vacation and look forward to a second visit.

6. Shopping tips
Shopping in a environment-friendly way. When you do some grocery shopping in Germany, be aware that you need unlock the cart by paying a deposit and after you use it, you can get your deposit back when you return the cart. Moreover, you are expected to bring your own bags to carry the groceries since the bags need to be purchased in Germany. Bringing your own bag is not only a way to save money but also a move to protect the environment in the long run.

7. Public phones
Public phones are rarely seen in Germany so you'd better make your cell phone bill paid before you leave. However, in some public places such as cafes, you may be allowed to make free phone calls and have free access to the Internet. But such places are rare and hard to find.

8. Dining tips
Water in most restaurants in Germany is not free, and don't be surprised when you are asked to pay for it. You are also expected to tip the waiters or waitresses in bars and restaurants in Germany. A good tip in Germany is two or three EUR.

The Benefits of Tourism for Cities

People from all over the world love to travel. Vacations provide many social and psychological benefits to individuals. They offer relaxation in a world full of stress. While vacations benefit travelers, they also benefit the cities that people travel to.

The first way cities benefit from tourism is a boosting of sales for local businesses. The more people that visit a city, the larger customer base these businesses enjoy. Certain businesses benefit more from tourism than others. Hotels and restaurants are especially successful in areas frequented with tourists. Also, landmarks, museums, theme parks, and other tourist attractions benefit. In the case of a state owned tourist site, the state can even generate extra revenue.

Most cities strive for tourists to see the brightest sides of their city, and naturally this leaves some tourists wanting to stay. Growing cities are always looking to increase their population. The more residents in the city the more successful the local businesses and government are. Not to mention better representation in the state and federal government. So increasing tourism not only brings you immediate benefits, but it can plant seeds for long term benefits that will keep on giving.

Some cities are naturally suited for tourism while others seem to have nothing to attract travelers, but even these seemingly empty cities can boost tourism by being creative and dedicating time and energy. Whether you're advertising tourist attractions in Cape Cod or Cape Canaveral, the money and effort will be worth it. Tourism brings so many gifts to cities in need.

Cape Cod Chamber ( http://www.capecodchamber.org/ ) invites you explore the cape cod tourist attractions including our 15 distinctive towns, arts & culture, quaint shops, wooded bicycle paths, plentiful events & festivals, and endless array of land and sea activities.

Come to Lanzarote For a Unique Vacation Experience

If you are looking for an unusual vacation that offers other-world landscaping with a mixture of artistry, sophistication, and primitive bartering thrown in, a trip to experience Lanzarote holiday attractions might be the ideal solution. This fascinating little island, the most eastern and fourth largest of the Spanish Canary Islands, sits off the coast off northwest Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Created by the breaking apart of the African and American continental plates, Lanzarote has been the site of the world's longest lasting volcanic eruption, continuing for almost 6 six years back in the 1730s. With ¼ of the island covered in lava, the island bears the scars of that catastrophe to this day; however, tourists from around the world come now to marvel at the geology of a surface most closely resembling that of the moon.

A visit to Timanfaya National Park is definitely a must if you want to see Fire Mountain, the origin of the massive volcanic eruption. Sitting in the southwest part of the island, the Park offers fantastic sunsets and impressive ethereal landscapes. You can explore by camel back or in the comfort of modern coach transportation. Choosing the 16 km chartered bus trip is a great way to absorb the total effects of the volcano on the geography of the land. Sturdy footwear and warm jackets are recommended for a comfortable sight-seeing experience.

With a population of only about 140,000, of which 75% are Spanish, Lanzarote may not be a big or heavily populated island, but the once-capital of Teguise comes alive every Sunday of the year. Tourists love to wander through the hundreds of stalls lining the cobbled streets and in the main square. The Teguise Market offers the atmosphere of a typical Spanish village backed by 500 years of history. Holiday gifts and souvenirs are plentiful at excellent prices. You can find everything from handbags to hair-braiding, from tablecloths to pottery, and you can even enjoy the social aspect of haggling over prices. Local entertainers playing pan pipes usually set up in the local square. Food is abundant too. You can order a proper English breakfast with fresh orange juice and just-cooked doughnuts, or you can try some of the local specialties. Numerous cafes and bars sprinkled throughout the market offer cool places to relax and soak in the local color. Choose to arrive by rental car or bus as taxis are expensive for this distance.

Most of the points of interest that you will experience during your Lanzarote holidays have one man standing in the shadows of their creation. Cesar Manrique, a locally-born artist and architect became a powerful and persuasive advocate for preserving the culture and uniqueness of this island during his lifetime. It was he who persuaded locals to limit the height of any new building to that of a palm tree. Gaudy high-rises do not exist here, thanks to his early intervention. After his death a foundation in his name was set up Tara de Tahiche at his former dream home. Situating it in the middle of a lava field, Manrique actually used naturally formed volcanic bubbles to create unique architectural living spaces. Above the subterranean rooms are levels constructed of traditional Lanzarote materials and architecture. This beautiful home includes lovely garden areas, a café, and a gift shop as well as samples of Manrique's incredible artistry.

You'll find more of Manrique's creative touch at the Cactus Gardens or "Jardin de Cactus." Over 10,000 plants representing more than 1400 species have been collected and displayed here by botanist Estanislao Gonzales Ferrer. This was Manrique's last finished work, spanning almost 20 years. You won't miss the giant green metallic sculpture, including spikes, which welcome visitors to the main entrance. The restored windmill and strange metal sculptures that surround the freshwater lake create a stark beauty unlike any other. A café and a gift shop complete the visit.

For a breath-taking view from a natural cliff 479 meters high, you must visit the northern end of the island. The Mirador Del Rio allows you to look out to the archaic island of La Graciosa. This special site was also created by Manrique in 1974, and you can still see his vision in the hidden balustrade café and bar area that have been integrated into the lava rock formations. This ecological wonder was once considered to be one of the "most important new buildings in the world."

The island of Lanzarote may be small by world standards, but it offers big lifetime experiences for those who want something a little less commercialized, a place that has built on its own unique volcanic history. You have a standing invitation to come and share, to be present in the richness of the past at Lanzarote.

Top 5 UK Places To Visit During Summer For Disabled Travellers

When planning a holiday, it's important to consider the needs of both the disabled person and his or her carers. What kind of break you want, the length of it, and the balance between exciting and relaxing. A good starting place for searching is the web. Key in holidays and disabilities and many helpful UK websites will come up. Also look at the chat boards for first hand accounts, which are often more reliable than the promotional websites. If you have a full time carer, consider what it is that they would enjoy as well. If you are going it alone, make sure that your trip caters to your specific needs by emailing or ringing the company or tour operator well in advance.

1) Mobius Kite Sports, Perranporth, Cornwall. This is the only company in the UK that offers four wheeled, hand controlled kite buggies in the UK. It's basically flying a kite in buggy, in the sand. Transfers from wheelchair to beach wheelchair to kite buggy are all assisted. One tester (from www.disabiltyholidayinfo.org,uk) said that after a tricky first start, he was flying the kite so well that it practically pulled him out of the seat. After practising in the wheelchair you are transferred to the buggy, which helps propel the kite into the air and keep it flying. You do need upper body strength but it's great fun and then you also have all the other attractions of Cornwall.

2) The Salt Line Trail, Sanbach, Cheshire. This is a trail that follows the old North Staffordshire Railway company and is wheelchair accessible, but not able to accommodate large powered chairs or mobility scooters. It is 3.5 miles long and is a beautiful, tree-lined trail with well surfaced paths. This is a unique nature reserve with rare plants and butterflies. Good maps and seating are available along the route, with a wheelchair accessible picnic area. One hiccup is that the nearest disabled toilet is six miles away at the Breerton Health Nature reserve (also worth a visit) so do go before you go!

3) Activities in Shropshire. Fancy a go at hand operated quad biking? Check out the Border quads at Builthy Hill farm and go wild. A training period on flat terrain is essential (and provided) before you tackle the trickier manoeuvres. You can make a day of it with archery, laser clay pigeon shooting and a BBQ lunch.

4) Water skiing near Betws-y-Coed, Wales. The Disabled Water Skiing Association have summer programmes in Wales and Nottingham for water skiing for those with limited mobility. All the equipment is adapted, including sitting skis.

5) Sailing with the Jubilee Sailing Trust. The mission statement of the JST is to overcome prejudices about disability and to enable people with a disability to do what they can do in an inclusive environment. Tall ship sailing is great fun and involves teamwork at every level, so everyone can use some strength. The ships have flat wide decks, lifts, handrails and wheelchair wide gangways.

Article by Gowrings Mobility: Gowrings are leading the way in wheelchair accessible vehicles, with a wide range of new and used mobility cars.

River Cruises: A Must Try Experience

The past year has seen the unveiling of cruise ships record-setting in size, ambition and extravagance, but one of the most popular trends in cruise vacations forgoes big ships, island-hopping and in some cases, even the ocean altogether.

This new trend is of course, river- and small-ship cruising, where passengers travel between destinations on smaller vessels that offer a more intimate setting, and enjoy itineraries that navigate through the inland waterways of destinations such as Eastern Europe, Egypt and China.

"Since 2004, international river cruise bookings have grown by more than 200 percent," Patrick Clark, managing director of river- and small-ship cruise line Avalon Waterways, said in a recent press release. Avalon Waterways is the industry leader in this brand of vacation, having earned numerous awards from industry authorities including Frommer's, Travel Weekly, Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler. Avalon Waterways is part of the Globus Family of Brands.

Cruise lines like Avalon Waterways have long-enjoyed success and popularity among a niche market of travelers. But like the occasional foreign film that finds box-office success with mainstream audiences, in 2010 the popularity of river cruising is on the rise, gaining the attention from an increased number of travelers as a must-try travel experience.

What's the reason for all this newfound attention towards river cruising? A lot of it seems to stem from the overall popularity of cruise vacations. More than 176 million North Americans have taken a cruise since 1980, and 50 million plan on taking a cruise sometime within the next three years, according to statistics from Cruise Lines International Association, Inc. (CLIA).

The majority of these travelers took what is sometimes referred to as a "deep water" cruise -- a big-ship cruise vacation that sails on ocean waters and visits ports-of-call on Caribbean islands, the Mexican Riviera and the Alaskan coastline, as well as Canada and New England.

At first glance, these two styles of cruises -- big ship and small ship -- seem like they would appeal to vastly different groups of travelers. After all, a vacation that involves a week's worth of beaches, sunbathing, snorkeling and shopping for souvenirs on several Caribbean islands seems a far cry from a week-long voyage through France along the Rhine River, departing from Paris with excursions to Claude Monet's gardens and the beaches at Normandy.

But the increasing popularity of small ship and river cruising seems to suggest a Venn Diagram -- big ship cruises on Side A, small ship cruises on Side B, and the intersection between growing larger as Side A and Side B converge onto an overlapping area populated by cruisers looking to broaden their travels by venturing to new countries, exploring new cultures and seeking new experiences all while enjoying a style of vacation that they know and love.

Though it might seem like comparing apples to oranges, it is easy to see the appeal of both styles of cruises, and why they overlap. Both offer more convenience than over-land travel, and let you explore and sample multiple destinations in a single trip while only having to unpack once. Cruise lines specializing in both have some of the highest customer feedback ratings in recorded history. Both offer great food and great entertainment. Both offer the chance to mix relaxation with insight into a destination's past (let's not forget that in addition to beaches, the Caribbean is rife with history and ecological beauty).

Greece is experiencing monetary chaos above its $400bn liability, with progressively more costly re costing and a repeatedly relegated credit ranking. The credit marking of Greece has been let down to scrap position, a menace stage that will currently compel many strong economic giants to stop booking Greece flights and to discontinue spending in the country's financial situations. As a result, the capital of Greece, Athens has still smaller amount of money to reimburse its massive debts and the most dangerous thing is that this financial disorder will extend to other European Union nations and a few other nations as well.

Athens which is famed as the well liked tourists' destination but now devoid of a firm tourism industry this Mediterranean nation will be on target for still more financial problems. The strikes against the government are going on which has affected the number of travelers to fall off who reserve Greece flights Many people who used to travel towards Greece in flocks and groups are avoiding coming there, and in return, the tourism sector of this nation is presenting great mark downs on the flights. So it is good time for the people who want to travel to Greece just to enjoy its perfect natural sightseeing as it will cost them quite less to reach there.

These fiscal crunches are faced by the nation just due to some mismanagement as the money has been over spent in numerous areas. These incorporated profit and promotion programs, the public division and government commissions, in addition to unprofitable efficacies, like Olympic Airways which is the state flag carrier and mostly used domestically and internationally as well for Greece flights that was ultimately privatized in 2008. Due to the demotion of its credit ranking to scrap, Greece could not safe the cash it requires from the open market to reimburse its loans and that is why had to go to the European Union and International Monetary Fund to rescue wealth.

Fear rises that this economic crisis will distress other countries as well who have a solitary European currency, the euro. As now the euro has dropped to the value one year low down in opposition to the US dollar due to this disaster. Numerous measures are to be taken by flights to Greece reduce its debts which include erasing civil servants' additional benefits, putting ban on early retirement, freezing state pension, merging some state firms and selling stakes to others.

I hope that taking positive measures can lead to improve the economic conditions of the country. Flights to Greece are the best way to fly there and research on the latest circumstances of the nation

Getting Romantic in Cape Town

If your holiday to Cape Town includes a family of four kids, the spouse and a hard-of-hearing Grandma thrown in for good measure, you'll probably be planning quite a different itinerary than if you are organising a romantic getaway with your significant other half. While taking the family on an adventure to South Africa would no doubt be an experience of a lifetime, sometimes it's nice to escape your busy everyday lives of social occasions and school runs and spend some quality time together - just the two of you. So here, for your pleasure, are some of Cape Town's most romantic attractions. Snuggle up and enjoy.

Cosy up in a Carriage

Now let's start off with one of the most romantic things a boy could ever say to a girl: "Will you share my carriage?" Many a woman's heart has melted in the velvet enclosures of a horse-drawn carriage; and when you add champagne into the equation, you're onto a true winner. Cape Town comes through in style with a carriage ride around the beautiful city gardens and streets. Nibble on hand-made chocolates as you are taken on a magical sunset journey and round the evening out with a candle-lit dinner on the waterfront - be still my beating heart!

Wine and Dine and Please be Mine

Speaking of candle-lit dinners on the waterfront, if you're planning on popping the question while on your romantic break to Cape Town, you will have an incredible selection of restaurants along the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront to choose from. Baia (just one of the choices) is one of the city's best seafood restaurants and if you book ahead for a table on the deck you will be rewarded with fabulous views of the harbour right at your fingertips. With a combination of delicious, out-of-this-world seafood dishes, wonderful local wines and an ambience that would make Don Juan swoon, no-one could resist a proposal and by midnight Cape Town waterfront will be the stuff of future grandchildren's legends! Finish off your evening with a stroll along the bustling waterfront which comes alive after dark and is the heart of Cape Town's exciting night-life.

You Make My Heart Do Flips

Now, we're assuming you don't need any help making your loved one's heart do back flips, however here's an idea to make their entire body feel the effect of your adoration! The Cape Town 'helicopter flip' is an experience you will remember for ever. As you soar over the spectacular harbour, within touching distance of a cloud, you will get what could easily be in the running for the title of the world's most scenic view. You can choose a variety of tours each taking in a different direction and, if budget permits, you can even hire the helicopter for a longer jaunt - perhaps to visit a vineyard for lunch? The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt

When most people think of Egypt, they think 'pyramids'. A tour of Giza is a must when visiting Egypt. The Valley of Giza is located just outside of Cairo on the west bank of the Nile. In the Valley of Giza the three largest pyramids are The Great Pyramid of Khufu, The Pyramid of Khafre and The Pyramid of Menkaura, all dedicated to a different king of Egypt.

THE GREAT PYRAMID OF KHUFU

This is the most famous pyramid in Egypt. Built for the pharaoh Khufu, the base of this pyramid covers an area of about nine acres and stands 449ft high (originally 479ft).
This pyramid was built with 2.3 million stone blocks made entirely from limestone, each weighing between 2 and 15 tons.

Until the 19th century, this was the tallest structure in the world and is the only one of the 'Seven Wonders of the Ancient World' still standing.

THE PYRAMID OF KHAFRE

Built for Khufu's son Khafre, this pyramid measures 707ft on each side and was originally 471ft high. The limestone and granite blocks used to build this pyramid each weighed about 2.5 tons. This pyramid was built on higher ground than The Great Pyramid, giving the illusion that this pyramid is taller!

It is believed that The Great Sphinx, near to Khafre's pyramid, is a royal portrait of Khafre. The Sphinx was built from soft sandstone and has only survived because it has been buried in the sand many times during its lifetime. The body of the Sphinx is 200ft long and 65ft tall. Part of sacred cobra on its head and its nose have been destroyed but all in all the Sphinx is still well intact.

THE PYRAMID OF MENKAURE

This is the smallest of the three pyramids and was built for Khafre's son Menkaure. Each side of this pyramid measures 356ft and was originally 218ft high. There are also three small pyramids in the valley which were built for three of Khufu's wives and several flat topped pyramids which were built for his favourite children.

Why Did Michelle Obama Visit Spain? 5 Reasons to Follow the First Lady to Spain B

The apparently sudden decision announced at the end of July regarding the summer vacation plans of the First Lady was well timed and whether intentionally or not has provided a further boost the still struggling tourist economy around the cosmopolitan Costa Del Sol and elsewhere in Spain. With world media recently focused on Spain the opportunity to once again show the world what made the Spanish costas so popular in the first place was a PR dream come true. Traveling without her husband, Michelle Obama as well as family and friends have recently concluded a hasty tour of a few of the best attractions that Spain has to offer. So why is Spain such a popular destination for summer holidays?

Luxurious Accommodation
Mrs Obama booked in at one of the numerous luxurious hotels in a coastal resort synonymous with luxury and wealth. Around Marbella a haunt of the jetset, movie stars and owners of large luxury yachts, there are numerous golf courses of the highest of standards, world famous Marinas and chic clubs and bars. Although Marbella wasn't seeing the amount of tourist numbers that it normally expects throughout the key summer months the arrival of the First Lady together with security, other staff and the world's press without doubt put a strain on the attractive lodging available in this area of Spain.

Beaches
The shores of southern Spain and Mallorca present a selection of lengthy sandy beaches, secluded inlets and striking cliffs which plummet into the sea. Forty five meters of the sandy shores in Marbella were reserved and sealed off for one of the days to allow the visiting family to have the benefit of time together next to the sparkling sea.

Architecture and Culture
Michelle Obama visited some spectacular monuments and structures in the course of her much talked about journey across Spain. Hanging on the hillsides on the flanks of the Sierra Nevada near Granada, the magnificent Alhambra Palace mixes complex Islamic architecture with European influences. Aside from that a day spent in the spectacular setting of Rhonda with its renowned bull ring along with the bridge above the ravine is in addition amazing. Spain has been home to various cultures over its history, most especially the Moors which inhabited a large amount of Spain for centuries. Although predominantly white the district of Andalucia even now maintains individual identity and a resilient cultural relationship which is obvious in its music, cooking and entertainment.

Local weather
The balmy evenings and sunny days found throughout the southern Mediterranean in the summer months are effectively guaranteed, allowing tourists on vacation in Spain to go to see points of interest or go to the beach and unwind in the fresh air, whatever the time of day.

Security
The population of Spain are kindhearted and pleasant and this is shown in the undeniable fact that Spain is still a quite safe country in which youngsters typically play unaccompanied in the plazas well after nightfall and there is barely any signs of intimidation or assaults - at least in the tourist areas.

The most interesting highlights of the Obama tour included their time in Marbella, Granada and Rhonda, all in Andalucia and the Island of Majorca, these are a good place to begin for researching a holiday for anyone wishing to visit the country. To visit all these will be a bit much to fit in all in the same holiday if you are merely hoping for a enjoyable holiday in which case a week in the North of Mallorca or south of the historic city of Granada on the Costa Tropical will almost certainly offer an enjoyable balance of activities and attractions as well as rest.

Grace has lived in Spain for many years and like many believe it is not only a great place for a holiday but also to live. If you are thinking of having a holiday in Spain and looking for villas to rent in Spain there are many opportunities to find vacation rentals near Granada on the Costa Tropical. Ski Holidays in Picturesque Zermatt

The village of Zermatt, nestled in the Valais region of southern Switzerland, is a popular destination for skiers from around the world. Surrounded by some of the most picturesque mountains in Europe and home to several challenging pistes, it is not hard to see why.

Those looking for ski chalets will find excellent examples in Zermatt, a village which is home to quite wonderful cuisine as well as being a European centre for skiing.

The majority of eateries will offer you incredibly high-quality food, with its oldest restaurant, Cafe DuPont, coming highly recommended. Its most famous dish is surely its delectable cheese fondue, making this particular restaurant a must for cheese-lovers.

Zermatt is home to nine out of the ten highest mountains in Europe and boasts one of its longest runs - a huge 13 km run from Klein Matterhorn back down to the village. This mountain is perhaps Zermatt's most famous, though not actually its largest - that title being taken by Monte Rosa - due to the tragic first successful attempt to conquer it heights by climbing to the top.

The entire village is surrounded by mountains, of which one, the Matterhorn, is frequently described as the most beautiful in the world. The sense of awe created by the epic views is magnified by the low level of traffic in the village. Branded a car-free zone, there are very few motor vehicles present on the roads even at peak times, keeping the air fresh and clean and the atmosphere deliciously quiet.

Because of this, it is not possible to drive to your ski chalet. There are, however, plenty of trains available to take you to your destination, and with so few cars a walk to your holiday home will never be an unwelcome option.

Zermatt is a lovely destination for skiers of all abilities, although the sense of challenge offered by the number of incredibly high mountains and long runs often attracts those who are more experienced. Pulling in 20,000 holidaymakers in the high season, this tiny village is a ski capital of Europe - once visited, it will not be forgotten.

Find fantastic ski chalets with Interhome! Our great selection makes our ski holidays truly memorable experiences.

American Making Free Travel Easier

Cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages are not the only ways to fly inexpensively. Redeeming frequent flier miles is an even cheaper alternative. American Airlines has announced good news for its frequent fliers giving them the opportunity to purchase short flights for only 8,750 miles each way or 17,500 miles round trip. Usually the lowest AAdvantage award level to purchase a round trip coach ticket with miles is 25,000, making American’s offer equal to a 30 percent discount. American’s offer is good until August 31st for travel up to December 15th on American, American Eagle, or American Connection nonstop flights less than 700 miles each way within the United States. Some of the popular routes that are included in this promotion are flights between New York and Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and Dallas and Denver. Trading in frequent flier miles for free tickets has been challenging this summer with many airlines flying close to or actually full cabins, as a result of the airlines reducing their capacity over the last two years and the economy rebounding. American Airlines has qualified its offer by saying that frequent flier seats are subject to seat availability. American’s offer to purchase free tickets using fewer miles is particularly good news for travelers who were recently informed that Delta has raised the number of miles required to secure free tickets on many routes to 40,000 miles from 25,000 miles in the past. www.cheapfares.com

How I Cut the Cost of My Family Travel in Half

Tho cost of flights for a family can be extremely expensive. I have found some great ways to save a lot of money when booking plane tickets. I start my research early for flight prices. I play around with the dates in the online booking tools to try to see how low the flight prices can go. I sign up for the airline's email distribution list so that I know when the airlines are having a seat sale.

I look at the total price of the flights including tax when comparing costs. Most airlines offer a 25% discount off the base ticket price for children. Due to the fact that the taxes and surcharges may vary depending on the airline and flight path, I might get a better deal on a higher priced ticket that has lower taxes when I factor in the child discount.

Travelzoo is an excellent source for finding the best travel deals. Every week they email me a list of discounted flights, hotels and tours. I have gotten excellent information on cheap flights from Travelzoo such as tickets from Toronto to Lima, Peru for less than $400 including taxes. Travelzoo has different versions depending on where you reside.

I check out the cost of flying out of nearby cities. I live in Ottawa but its a four hour drive to Toronto. The cost of flying out of Toronto can be significantly less than flying out of Ottawa. I can save hundreds of dollars even when I factor in the cost of gas, parking and an overnight hotel.

Plane Ticket Savings

Regular price of ticket Toronto to Lima $896.00 including tax. My price was $396.00 taxes in for each person.

How I Save BIG Money on Accommodations

The cost of accommodations can be quite pricey for a family if you are looking at staying in a typical hotel room. I look for hostels to save money when I travel with my kids. A lot of hostels offer family rooms with ensuite bathrooms at prices significantly less than a hotel. Another option is a serviced apartment where you have access to a kitchen to cook in and lots of space to spread out in. This is usually much cheaper than paying for 2 hotel rooms. I also look for cheap accommodations that are centrally located so that I also save on local transportation.

Accommodation Savings

Cost of the Beijing Swissotel for a family of 4 was $220.00 per night. Cost of the hostel I stayed in was $37.00 for a family room!

How I Save on Local Transportation

When traveling with my kids the cost of local transportation can really add up. I take public transportation whenever possible. If there is a subway at my destination then I use this to move around. My kids also have fun trying to navigate the subway. I try to always book a centrally located hotel close to public transport and close to markets, stores and restaurants.

Local Transportation Savings

The cost of a taxi from my Shanghai hotel to the Science and Technology Museum was $12.00 each way. Cost of the subway for my family of four was $2 each way.

How I Save Loads of Money on Tours and Attractions

I always look for free or low cost attractions for my kids and I to enjoy. We always head to a local park for a few hours. The kids have fun exploring the different playgrounds and usually end up making some new friends too. I always search for free activities, museums or festivals. Organized local tours can also drive up the cost of your family trip. On a recent family vacation to Negril Jamaica I wanted to visit YS Falls for the day. I managed to save quite a bit by hiring a driver for the day and paying our own entrance fee. It was also great to have the flexibility of having a driver as I was able to leave when the kids were tired and we were able to stop for a delicious jerk chicken meal along the way.

Savings on Tours

The cost of an organized tour for a family of 4: $270.00

The price of a taxi driver and entrance for 2 adults, 2 children $145.00

How I Save Money on Dining

The cost of eating on your vacation can take a big bite out of the family travel budget. There are lots of ways to save money on dining on your trips. For breakfast I head to a local grocery store and stock up on fruits, baked goods and cereal (I pack a couple dollar store bowls and spoons). I try to book hotel rooms with a mini fridge and stock up on drinks and snacks as well. I also try to eat where the locals eat. The food is usually cheaper and much tastier than at the inflated tourist restaurants.

Savings on Dining

Cost of the breakfast buffet at my hotel in Paris was $60.00. The cost of some fruit and pastries was $18.00 for the whole family.

Now with all the money I have saved I can go on another family trip!

There are many more ways to save BIG money on your family trips.

Best Picnic Places in the USA

I love to visit the USA, there is so much to see and the choice is so diverse. So I thought I would write about a really enjoyable, inexpensive family pass time, picnicking. If you are booking a vacation in the States and just want to do some simple stuff and spend time with your family, outdoors, enjoying the weather and the scenery, then the USA has some of the most beautiful places in the world to do this.

Below I have mentioned some wonderful locations for a picnic. These are just some of my ideas and I hope they help but it might be an idea when planning your vacation to consult an expert before making a decision, after all I'm sure you'll want to do more than just picnic! Here's where a good travel agent, that knows the area, will be useful or better still why not try an online travel club, these are becoming so popular due to the variety of locations, accommodations and travel arrangements they can offer. I can personally recommend Primo Vacations which is a low cost life time membership but they offer a huge range of heavily discounted stock, often up to 80% off.

Anyway, here are 5 top destinations in the USA which are fantastic locations to enjoy the great outdoors and also offer so much more too!

1. Cumberland Islands in Georgia is one of the most beautiful places for outdoor activities. It is just a few hour drives from the southern part of Savannah. It is a national seashore that has been tagged as a picnicking haven. You can also pack some things so you can enjoy hiking, camping, and swimming. Visiting Cumberland Islands is a great choice for people who want to experience the peace and quiet here as the National Park Service restricts 300 people only on the island at any one time. Just the place for a romantic picnic!
2. Grand Park, Chicago is also another great destination where there are lots of gourmet treats for food lovers. Here you will find food festivals every year. You will also find live music, the art institute, stunning statues, rose gardens and the addition of Millennium Park, in which you'll find an outdoor music pavilion, an ice rink and a theater - built below ground - as well as a modern fountain and a iconic monument, the Cloud Gate. A winding, 282m long footbridge designed by Gehry connects Daley Bicentennial Plaza in Grant Park with the new park. Another bridge, the Nichols Bridgeway, connects Millennium Park with the Art Institute. Many events have taken place here in Grant Park, not least on November 4, 2008, when Barack Obama accepted the post of president of the United States before a crowd of 125,000 people. 25
3. Cranberry Islands, Maine is also another great designation for picnicking. On the Cranberry Islands you'll get a cool and calming break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Hike or bike the islands in safety, and discover the interesting museums and quality gift shops - and the best views of the mountains of Acadia National Park. But the Cranberry Islands are true islands. To get here you must have your own boat, or hire one, leaving your car and the hustle and bustle on Mt. Desert.
4. Red Rock Canyon Nevada, located just a short drive west of the Las Vegas Strip, with its glittering hotels, world-class restaurants, and unmatched entertainment choices, Red Rock Canyon is an oasis in a neon desert. Here you can go horseback riding in the morning and have a Red Rock wedding in the afternoon or you can pet the wild burros that line the road just at feeding time. Alternatively you can go rock climbing and hiking where you will see wild horses, bighorn sheep and well as the wild burros roaming free. What a place for a picnic!
5. Big Sur, California, This region is about 89 highway miles (143 km) in length along California's coastal Highway 1 and lies between the San Francisco Bay area and the Los Angeles area. Hiking trails in the Big Sur region range from relatively flat nature trails through the trees or along the rocky coastline, suitable for children or those with disabilities, to challenging routes for long day hikes or overnight trips. Wilderness permits are required for overnight backpacking stays in many locations. This stunning location has provided inspiration to photographers, painters, writers and musicians. Again, so much I could mention here. A wonderfully tranquil place and, of course, ideal for picnic.

Hopefully these few examples have given you some ideas of where you'd like to picnic in USA!

Pampering Yourself In The Air

This is something which could only be asked by somebody who has never flown on a private jet. Private charter jets offer a lot more than any commercial airliner, mostly for the reason that they highlight on their customers and what they are looking for from traveling in the air. This is a customer service structured industry that places you, the traveler, at the wheel allowing you to direct your travel time as you choose.

From the instant you pick up the phone and call a private jet agency the difference can be immediately sensed. These agencies pride themselves on superior customer service wanting every last detail of every trip to be exactly what that person is looking for. Every detail and service is going to be illustrated in detail and the customer service agent works along with you to customize make your travel experience to your every need.

If you're shopping for a flight that will involve a meal, you can easily order specifically what you want. And if you need specific accommodations to be made, including hotel reservations, dinner reservations, or even theater tickets your whole holiday could be reserved utilizing your private jet agency as your full travel agency. they'll cover everything you want during your air travel as well as all your other travel demands.

There are a lot of optional extras which you will be able to add onto your private jet as well and if you're taking a lengthy flight you may perhaps want to think about having a masseuse on board for an in flight massage, a beautician along for the ride, or maybe thinking about having another person travel with you to give you a manicure and pedicure during your flight. This is not only an incredible way to pass time while traveling, but additionally a fantastic way to blend in a little added spoiling so you arrive at your desired destination looking and feeling your best.

Matching Up private charter jet to commercial air travel flights is similar to contrasting classic cars to demolition derby cars. There truly is just no comparison. Even though each may take you to the same destination the only thing in which these two modes of transportation have in common is that they each fly. Private jet are a well superior method of air travel that offer you everything you desire from airline travel and nothing you don't.

A private jet that is hired for business is a great way to not miss out on valuable meeting time, with employees or business associates, due to travel. If you would like to hire a private jets charter log onto http://www.privatejetscharter.net.

South Africa, Surf and Safari , Whales and Garderns

South Africa is more than a place you merely see, its a country to experience with all five senses. It's an emotional encounter that makes one want to return and so I have now on my 5th visit to this land of beauty and freedom. It is a land of contrasts where traditional African ways are blended with those of modern Europe.

Here we are more a traveler than a tourist as we set out on safari changing hotels each night. We follow the Garden Route, the premier tour route preferred by locals. Included in our group of 45 were a fighter pilot, 2 physicians, 2 psychoanalysts (who came in handy for me), mother/daughter, father/son, the uncle of Julia Roberts and one of my good friend whose passport stamps trump mine, Frank.

As we passed endless shantytowns of tin shacks, we understood why the unemployment rate was at 39%. This is the wealthiest nation in Africa, but its resources are stretched due to the influx of 50,000 refugees each year from neighboring nations.

We learn that when a man erects a hut on your front lawn, after 72 hours you must allow him to remain or find him a new place to settle. In a population 30% white and 70% of color, reverse discrimination occurs for jobs. There are 11 official languages in South Africa. Most speak Afrikaans, a language derived from the Bushmen and Dutch.

There is an indescribable warmth and friendliness in the people here. "Ubuntu" is their word for welcome. They have no word for stranger in their native tongue.

Day 2 - Cape Town rules with incredible natural wonders and trendiness. A cross between San Francisco and Rio, I could certainly reside here. We do a full day Peninsula tour including Camps Bay, Fish Hook, Simons Town, Hout Bay and more. Along the spectacular coast we saw whales breeching.

The highlights included a cruise to Seal Island, a hike among thousands of penguins and funicular up to Cape of Good Hope where the Atlantic and Indian oceans merge. There were many great Kodak moments. At night all scattered to the famous V&A Waterfront with its plethora of pubs and cafes.

Day 3 - We head to laid back Hermanus for a whale of a good time. The annual whale festival is on led by the world's only "Whale Crier" who blows his horn at each sighting. Whales gather here every September to mate. The clear bays are nurseries for mother and calves.

There are about 5000 Southern Right Whales named centuries ago as they were the right whales to hunt. They have no teeth and swallow up to 400lbs of fish per day.

My supplier said we should see thousands gathered here in protected bays, but locals told me they were shy today and only a few surfaced. Nevertheless it was a great free day of festivities. The whole town goes whale-gaga and we loved mingling with the friendly locals.

Springtime is in bloom now with a kaleidoscope of geraniums, lavender, canola, starburst and colorful protea. My wedding bouquet was calla lilies. Here they grow like weeds. We spent the night in the charming tiny town of Arniston. Our hotel sat ocean's edge surrounded by mountains that were dotted with lighthouses.

Day 4 - We depart through majestic mountains and Mossel Bay famous for their calamaris that are the size of steaks. Our destination was Oudtshoorn, "Feather capital of the world." Since 1864 this is the world's foremost supplier of all things ostrich; hide, meat and feathers. We visit a huge farm to witness mating and hatching. Some got to ride the oddball creatures.

Next stop was a wildlife center for an opportunity to get extremely close to various native animals. We had our photos petting leopards, lion cubs and a pigmy hippo named Humphrey. This was home to "Duma," the famous cheetah from the movie of the same name.

Rare white tigers are bred here. There are only 300 left on earth. Many in our group partook in the worlds only "caged croc dive" where they were lowered by cage into the warm water and surrounded by chomping jaws. These Nile crocs are huge. One bite and could break your spine and shatter all your ribs. This place provided many thrilling encounters.

Our final stop was the famous UNESCO Cango Caves, Arica's largest show cave. I nearly opted out of going as I'm not a cave woman. It was however, incredibly impressive as we walked chamber to chamber in massive dry caverns which are a mere 800,000 years old.

Day 5 - We arrive to lovely Plettenberg Bay. First tour is Monkeyland, the world' first free roaming mutli-specie primate sanctuary. Here it' all about rescue of previously abused monkeys, baboons, apes and lemurs of Madagascar. They tried to steal our belongings at our outdoor lunch.

Later we visited the Elephant sanctuary for a hands on interactive educational tour. I didn' know African elephants could be tamed like Asian or Indian. We learned that no other creature is as understanding as the elephant which can learn, remember, meditate and conceive such things man can hardly perform.

We enjoyed a Trunk-In-Hand tour where we walked, fed and examined by touch its ears, tail, tongue and tear ducts. That was sweet. The trainers were Zulu-men. I departed giving them a thumbs up. With big grins they thanked me. I didn' know this gesture in Zulu signified they were highly fertile.

We spent 2 nights at Whalesong Lodge overlooking the ocean and a favorite of all. Here a surprise wedding reception was arranged for us with cakes, local wines and more from our US supplier. After Frank made a heartfelt toast, we all sang "Going to the airplane and we're gonna get married." Dinners were on our own. Everything is so affordable here that we often ordered 4 courses.

Day 6 - We've traveled to Knysna, oyster capital of the world. There we boarded a ferry and sailed to Featherbed Nature Reserve. 4x4 Jeeps then took us to the summit of the Western Heads for breathtaking views of the sea.

From there we did a downhill hike through forest to the crashing waves on the coast. (It's the most dangerous bay on earth for boats which sail these waters and thus are unable to even get insurance.)

A fresh seafood buffet greets us at the Food Forest set under a canopy of milkwood trees. In departing this little piece of paradise, I noticed the pier is black covered in mussels. Rare seahorses are bred here. These remarkable creatures mate for life and it's the male that gives birth.

In the afternoon we joined Ocean Safari's in search of whales, dolphins and sharks. For me, this was the highlight of the trip. It was so unique how they launched our boats like rockets into the Atlantic.

These research boats allowed us legally to get extremely close to whales. Our boat came upon two 50 ton whales mating. One was the size of Moby Dick that gracefully arced as the other slapped its flipper with a cascade of water. It was like seeing 2 motorcoaches rolling in the water. Another boat spotted 2 pods of 20 whales playing together.

This eco-adventure was a powerful experience that left us in stunned silence until our departure. Fighting the surf on our return to shore was like storming the beaches of Normandy (sans bullets) and very thrilling.

Day 7-9 - We set out for our longest drive of 4 hours to our game reserve. The scenery was unblemished under the African sun with rolling hills, indigenous forests, golden beaches and sand dunes that spilled into the sea.

We arrived to luxurious Kariega, a private reserve with an abundance of game that was a world apart. Set in 14,000 lush acres bordered by the Bushmans rivers, it was stunning. We passed the electric gates to see herds of gazelle, water buck, antelope and wildebeest. The landscape was a giant lawn for the omnivore wildlife to satisfy their appetites.

Five game drives were provided and at the sunset photo stops wine and beverages were added. Our ranger guides were excellent and these were the most comfortable safari jeeps made. Conservation here is paramount. In nature nothing is guaranteed.

I've known friends to spend thousands of dollars on African safaris and with rain they saw little of anything. The benefit of a private reserve is guaranteed sightings.

This was just a taste of what Africa holds but here we obtained the best photography ever within mere feet of lions, elephants, rhino and countless more animals. The Cape buffalo is the most dangerous animal on earth due to its unpredictability. It's the only animal a Masai warrior will run from.

Several here had been semi-domesticated and suddenly approached our jeeps. One client reached out to pet it as if it were the barnyard cow. It remained calm but rage could occur within seconds. For free time we enjoyed a river cruise among hippos and hiked on marked trails. No where else have I been able to walk among wild eland and zebra in the bush like I did here!

Our farewell "Boma dinner" of traditional cuisine was set under the stars of the Southern Cross. The local staff sang and danced by a bonfire. It was a perfect end to our journey well done.
